What’s the difference between live streaming, webcasting, and podcasting

Live streaming, webcasting, and podcasting. What’s the difference?

Hello, I’m Royce Hildreth owner of Hildreth Media Group. So what makes live streaming, webcasting, and podcasting different from each other? Even though webcasting and podcasting share the same suffix it’s actually webcasting and live streaming that are nearly identical.

Live streaming is the transmission of live video and audio media over the internet and webcasting is the action of broadcasting an event over the internet.By live streaming you are also webcasting, so they are basically the same thing and can be used interchangeably. If you only transmitted audio it would be considered a webcast only.

Now this leaves us with podcasting. Podcasting is a pre-recorded audio file that is distributed as a part of a series. So unlike streaming or webcasting, podcasting is just an audio file and unlike streaming or webcasting, podcasting is a part of a series that is usually delivered on a particular schedule, once a week or once a month – not just a one off.

As podcasting matured there were new iterations that developed like video podcasts. Video podcasts originate from either recording video along with the podcast or from a live webcast or even a live broadcast. The recorded media would then be reformatted to be considered a podcast. For example, The Conan O’Brien broadcast that originally aired on TBS is re-released as a podcast to a set schedule.
